An Interview with Artist Claire Fisher

Every month during the First Friday Art Walk in Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe we bring in an artist or maker for a pop-up! This month, one of the artists we’re featuring is Claire Fisher. Ahead of her pop-up with us, we asked Claire some questions about herself, her art, and sustainability. Enjoy!

When did you start making and selling art?
I started making art when I was little. My favorite thing to make was handmade cards for holidays, birthdays, anytime I had to give a gift to someone. I've always felt like an artist. I grew up dancing in the studio, throwing pottery in high school, attending college for dance. Now in Denver professionally dancing. I have commissioned various works in the past but only recently started my art, to help support my living and also my mental health.

What inspires your work?
The outdoors, my experiences I have gained so far, friends and family. While being a city dweller, I wanted to find a way to bring the outdoors to me, specifically in my fashionable art. I find it therapeutic to paint landscapes because I feel I can get lost in what I'm painting while being surrounded by the concrete jungle.

What does sustainability mean to you and how does your art reflect that belief?
In my collections, I source most of my materials from thrift stores, or recycle them from my closet. I've never really followed the trend of fast fashion, so the process of the hunt to find something unique that someone else has left behind excites me.

What is your goal as an artist?
My goal as an artist is to physically create and cultivate work in fashion that is relatable but also new for the viewer or customer. I hope to keep using my various art mediums to reach new communities and realms in the art world.

If you were an animal/breakfast cereal/ice cream flavor/style of architecture what would you be?
I would be a Macaw/ The discontinued Kellogg's Special K Blueberry with Lemon Clusters Cereal/
Carmel Chocolate Toffee Ice Cream/ Deconstructionism Style Architecture

What’s next for you? Are there any projects or goals you are currently working toward that you'd like to share about?
Recently I've been creating choreography on the T2 Dance Company based in Boulder Colorado, inspired by dream states and clouds. It is going to be performed next January 2024 in Boulder at the Versatility Dance Festival, and also premiered in Chicago in April.

Are there any artistic mediums you’d like to explore that you haven’t yet?
One artistic medium that I'd like to explore is printmaking/hand painting on fabrics then using the fabric to create costumes, fashion, and for dance productions.
